Learning by the Sea: Custodians of the Ocean Returns to St Luke’s for Term Two

On June 4, Term Two of Custodians of the Ocean made waves once again at St Luke’s Grammar Bayview campus.

The program, co-created by Beata Edling and Pia Dorer (Studio Oi) and adapted from the Department of Primary Industries’ Marine Estate Strategy, brought students face-to-face with both the beauty and fragility of their local marine environment.

After a classroom recap of Term One, students explored ocean users, human impacts, and the growing challenge of marine plastics. They then took their learning outdoors with a powerful cultural experience at Mona Vale Beach. A smoking ceremony led by Uncle Neil and didgeridoo performance by Matt James grounded students in Country before they rolled up their sleeves for a beach clean-up led by Surfrider’s Jude Furniss.

Hands-on learning in action! Measuring, sorting and analysing human impact on our oceans.

Local MP Jacqui Scruby also joined the clean-up, showing her support for ocean literacy and youth-led action. We feel incredibly lucky to have such strong backing from both our local parliament and community — together, we’re making waves that matter.
